It’s no lie, self-isolation can be pretty boring. You’re stuck inside with nowhere to go. Luckily, I’ve pulled some artists for you to check out while you’re inside!
First up is White Reaper. They’re a garage punk band based out of Louisville, Kentucky. They’ve released two EPs and three full length albums.
The best way for me to describe their sound is to say think of The White Stripes. Then add additional band members. They have a sound that belongs to this decade but also could be placed in the early 2000s. I recommend their song, Might be Right!
Next up is an artist I only recently discovered. His name is David Burd but his rap alias is Lil Dicky.
How do I explain this sound? Take The Lonely Island and make them only slightly more serious. Maybe.
Lil Dicky came onto the music scene in 2013 when his video for Ex-Boyfriend went viral overnight. Since then, he has collaborated with artists such as Justin Bieber, Ariana Grande, Snoop Dogg, and Chris Brown.
His music is both funny, and serious. His song Earth was released to raise awareness towards pollution, climate change, and the environment.
My favorite song by him is actually not funny, which is rare with his music. It’s called Molly and it features my favorite singer, Brendon Urie (Panic! At the Disco). It is a breakup song and it’ll put you in your feels.
If you want to see more of Lil Dicky, he has a new show on FXX and Hulu called Dave. New episodes are Thursday nights at 11 p.m. Or you can watch the following day on Hulu!
Lastly, I’ve listened to a lot of AJR. The band is three brothers from New York City.
They mix pop and electronic sounds to create a sweet mix of new music. Similar to Lil Dicky, their music was noticed on YouTube. Their song, Weak has over 57 million views on YouTube.
I saw AJR in concert in 2018 and I bought the meet and greet package. While talking to Jack, the lead singer, he asked if we had met and where. I told him we haven’t but he insisted he knew me. It was a good light-hearted conversation and as a fan, you feel noticed.
They recently released a song entitled Bang! and it’s very catchy!
To wrap this up, self isolation isn’t fun. Make sure you take time to yourself. Ten minutes of meditation, do some stretches, learn a new skill, make yourself marketable. Whatever you decide to do, make it fun.
We’ll get through this.
