Bringing new music and new variety to the listening audience is something student DJs do at Muskingum University’s WMCO radio station.
One of the new and upcoming artists in the WMCO music library is Haha Charade. Residing in Delaware, the band interviewed with DJ Robbi Moore this summer.
Calling from Occupy Studio, their location on the University of Delaware college campus, they discussed their music and creative process.
“This place is really cool because it’s like a music community here. It’s also cool because we are one of the only rock groups that uses it,” said Matt Bowe, vocals for the band.
Alex Wade and Justin Lefler, both guitar and vocals, Matt Bowe, vocals, and Brendan McBride, drums, formed Haha Charade in September 2018.
With an alternative rock, hip hop, reggae, indie, and punk sound, Haha Charade infuses styles to create their unique sound that DJs can spin during their radio show.
Their most recent album is “Joseph Gordon Lightfoot,” inspired by an inside joke with one of their friends who forgot Joseph Gordon Levitt’s name.
Lefler wrote and sang the song “Old Friend,” which was well-received by WMCO DJs upon its release. The song depicts missing a friend that you have not seen in a long time and having a hard time reconnecting.
Moore shared with the band how the song meant a lot to her as a result from having moved a lot as a child.
She asked what the song meant to them… “Exactly what you said. We totally agree it’s like you read our minds,” said Bowe.
Bowe said it’s not a bad thing, but just a part of life.
“Yeah that’s where I got the inspiration for this. It’s about how you can still be cool with people even if you aren’t as close as you used to be,” said Lefler.
The music video for “Old Friend” is out now, and the band has a show on Friday, Nov. 5 in Philadelphia, PA.
