New Concord, home to Muskingum University, has been ranked No. 24 in a nationwide survey to determine the “collegiest” college town.
The Washington Post analyzed U.S. Census data on urban areas with the largest share of college students. Urban areas follow population-density patterns, not typical town borders or municipal boundaries.
Andrew Van Dam from The Washington Post said the classic college town is built around the school at its heart.
“Having Muskingum University in the Village of New Concord is part of who we are,” said New Concord Mayor Jennifer Lyle. “The college and town were founded almost simultaneously. We have grown and evolved together.”
The college-student share of the population is 45.1 percent based on a village population of 2,836.
“We are proud to be part of the New Concord community and to contribute to the educational and economic well-being of the Appalachian region,” said Muskingum University President Susan S. Hasseler.
