Listen to WMCO 90.7 Sunday, April 12 for concert performances from the Muskingum University Music Department in celebration of the Easter holiday.
Selections from five performances are featured 12-5 p.m. on WMCO.
Concert 1 | “A Space Spectacular,” performed by the Southeastern Ohio Symphony Orchestra on April 28, 2019. The concert features famous space themes including Superman, 2001: A Space Odyssey, and Star Wars.
Concert 2 | “O Beautiful for Heroes Proved: A Musical Celebration of John H. Glenn, Jr.” A Muskingum Department of Music collaboration, the performance features the wind ensemble, concert choir, chamber singers, and faculty soloists. The concert includes works commissioned by Muskingum in honor of Sen. Glenn, including a work for band by Ryan Nowlin, titled “Godspeed, John Glenn,” and a choral work composed by Dr. Zebulon Highben which utilizes text by Muskingum English professors Drs. Jane Varley and Vivian Wagner.

Concert 3 | “Fire & Fury, Darkness & Light,” performed by the Muskingum Valley Symphonic Winds, Muskingum Concert Choir, and Muskingum Chamber Singers May 5, 2019. The concert features a band and choral setting of Jack Runestad’s “Proud Music of the Storm,” which utilizes text by Walt Whitman. This work was commissioned by Muskingum University to celebrate the 200th anniversary of Whitman’s birth.
Concerts 4 | Selections from the Muskingum Concert Choir, Chamber Singers, and Wind Ensemble annual 2019-2020 tour concerts. The large choral and instrumental ensembles embark on annual tours to promote Muskingum University and to showcase student talent.
The choir songs were performed at the Home Concert in Brown Chapel on Sunday, March 8, after returning from their winter tour through West Virginia, North Carolina, and Tennessee. The choir was part of a Sunday morning service at Duke Chapel, offering music in combination with the Duke Chapel Choir.
The Muskingum Wind Ensemble pieces are from the “American Visions” performance Nov. 15, 2019.
