Campus recognizes mental health awareness

Mental Health Awareness Week is the first week of October.

Muskingum University Counseling Services partnered with Dr. Shawn Starcher’s Small Group Communication class on Oct. 3 to host two Mental Health Awareness Week events on Muskingum’s Quad.

The two events were called Shredding the Stigma and Breaking the Cycle, and both allowed students to partake in a hands-on activity to destress.

Shredding the Stigma allowed students to write their stress on a piece of paper, and then shred them.

“The idea is that you’re shredding them and letting them go,” said Director of Counseling Services, Leah Shirer.

Breaking the Cycle allowed students to write down any mental health concerns on a plate, and then smash the plate on the ground.

Green ribbons represent mental health awareness. Counseling Services and the Small Group Communication class handed them out on Oct. 3.

Shirer said the event was the most popular of the day.

The Small Group Communication class and Counseling Services were also giving out green ribbons which represent mental health awareness.

Shirer said they are hoping to host this event again in the future.

Among those in attendance were New Concord Village Council members, Muskingum University President Susan S. Hasseler, East Muskingum Local Schools Superintendent Dave Adams, and New Concord Mayor Jennifer Lyle.

“So excited after all this time, it’s just been a wonderful process all the way through to have it finally come to fruition. I couldn’t be happier and I’m especially happy to see so many people here from the community,” said Lyle.

Many residents in and around New Concord shared similar sentiments, while enjoying their complimentary drinks and waiting to see if they won the raffle.

Representatives for Special Olympics Ohio and the manager for the new Sheetz location is presenting the $2,500 donation. Sheetz donated a total of $5,000 at this event.

“I love the idea of being so close to home and convenient, easy to get to eat through the drive-thru. Heck yeah, it’s a win-win,” said Becky Wolkman. “I’m like seven minutes away, I’ll be here often.”

During the ribbon cutting ceremony, Sheetz donated $2,500 to Special Olympics Ohio and to the Mid-Ohio Food Collective adding up to $5,000 donated.

“Sheetz is a really wonderful family company and I think that’s such a beautiful fit for the Village of New Concord because we are such a family-friendly community and I think this is going to be the start of a pretty wonderful thing for all of us,” said Lyle.

The store includes seven lanes that offer high flow diesel fuel and Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) for semi-trucks, and 14 fuel terminals for other vehicles. The store will also feature 29 free parking spaces, available for overnight parking to truckers.
