The Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) canceled the rest of the 2020 spring sports season effective Monday, March 16, because of the rapid spread and continuing uncertainty of the coronavirus.
In a statement made Thursday, March 12, the OAC said that individual schools will decide the NCAA championship participation status and practice needs of winter sports teams currently still playing. Also, all meetings, practices, and all other off-season activities for other sports have been discontinued.
“While we recognize the profound disappointment that will be felt by the many student-athletes, parents, fans, and coaches, the ongoing spread and uncertainty of COVID-19 have made the continuation of athletic activities untenable,” the OAC said in its statement.
The OAC will appeal to the NCAA to regain a year of eligibility and an extra semester to participate for all spring athletes who competed at the start of the 2020 season.
The OAC also has canceled the Clyde Lamb Awards Banquet scheduled for May.
