New Concord Police Chief Mindy Peck shared details with Village Council about new radar equipment recently received by the department.
Peck said the new technology will reportedly make the village’s streets safer during the June 11 council meeting.
The new handheld radar laser equipment will make it easier for officers to gauge speed without the need to man their cruisers. The equipment uses light beams rather than high or low pitched tones to indicate speed, according to Peck.
Officers took a class through the National Highway Traffic Safety Association. The class entailed learning why the equipment is important, a piece-by-piece breakdown of the equipment, with practice using it in the field, in cruisers, and on foot.
Peck said the laser radar will be extremely helpful for high traffic areas such as school zones where it’s harder for cruisers to access areas to monitor speed.
Along with the new laser radar technology, council member Jennifer Lyle of the Safety Committee discussed the idea of bringing a new vehicle to the police department and making improvements to signage in the village.
“There are areas where we need to post some speed limits that haven’t been posted, make some changes possibly to directions, and possibly adding a stop sign here and there,” said Lyle. “We discussed specific locations that are most important to the police department.”
Roads to be affected by the proposed improvements are still under consideration.
The next New Concord Village Council meeting is Monday, July 9 at 6:30 p.m.
New Concord Village Council meetings air every day at 7 a.m., noon, and 7 p.m. on Orbit Television and can be heard on WMCO 90.7 Sundays and Wednesdays at noon.
