The Village of New Concord is celebrating the 60th anniversary of Sen. John H. Glenn’s Friendship 7 mission with the second annual Friendship 7-Miler race.
The 2022 Friendship 7-Miler is Saturday, July 9 at 8:30 a.m. The event is sponsored by the John Glenn High School Cross-Country and Track & Field Boosters. Runners can register online.
The course runs from Cambridge (Glenn’s birthplace) to New Concord along John Glenn Highway (U.S. Route 40).
There is also a virtual registration option for those who would like to participate from home.
The first Friendship 7-Miler was part of a three-day centennial celebration in July 2021 commemorating the life and accomplishments of Glenn. There were 200 runners for the 7-Miler and 100 for the 5k in its inaugural year.
This year’s race will coincide with the 63rd annual New Concord Fireman’s Festival.
Registration closes on July 6. Ohio State Representative Adam Holmes will kick off the race as the honorary starter. He also was the honorary starter for the 2021 race.
Glenn orbited earth aboard Friendship 7 on Feb. 20, 1962.
