The New Concord Police Department received a grant provided by the National Police Foundation to install a heat alarm for K-9 Officer Norco inside the K-9 cruiser.
This grant specifically allows agencies the ability to implement heat alarms inside their K-9 cruisers, and NCPD will receive an amount between $1,100 and $1,300 to put in the heat alarm.
New Concord Police Chief Mindy Peck said the alarm will monitor the temperature inside the cruiser and notify Officer Jeff Traub if the temperature becomes too high.
“It’s got a temperature control in the back by Norco’s cage…it’s like a little square box. It looks like a thermostat. It keeps track of the temperature in the car, and Officer Traub has a little device that he wears on his belt…it will alert him,” said Peck.
Peck was thrilled to receive the grant given that ten grants are given out across the nation each year.
“I was excited because I didn’t think we would get it… very thankful,” said Peck.
The National Police Foundation asked participants to send in an essay sharing why each agency felt that they deserved the grant.

The police department plans to introduce this new equipment hopefully within the next month.
Peck intends to apply for a K-9 grant in September through Aftermath Services to fund their K-9 unit. Aftermath Services offers $5,000, $3,000, and $1,000 grant every year.
