The beginning of February means the start of Black History Month. This is a time to acknowledge and pay respect to African American men and women in history and the contributions they have made to American society. Black History Month is important because it is celebrating American history.
Muskingum is hosting various events that students can attend to celebrate this historical month. First is the Living Library where every Wednesday the library will be hosting African American Muskingum alumni spotlights starting at 7 p.m. Each week Muskingum alumni from different decades will come and share their stories. Zoom links will be provided through email and are also available on Muskingum’s Diversity, Access, and Inclusion (DAI) website.
The DAI office is looking for student submissions to showcase in the 2021 Black History Month Art Explosion: A Cultural Showcase. The theme is The Black Family: Representation, Identity, & Diversity. Students can enter a 2-3 minute submission that can be shared online. Submissions can be photography, art, food, fashion, poetry, dance, and music.
Muskingum will also be hosting a Black History Month movie night on Feb. 23. The DAI office will be showing “If Beale Street Could Talk” in Boyd Science Center room 343. There will be a discussion panel included at the screening.
Join Muskingum in highlighting the history made by African Americans both past and present.
