Muskingum University Associate Professor of Political Science, Dr. Richard Arnold, has brought back the Model United Nations club (Model UN) after a two-year hiatus due to COVID-19.
Model UN is a simulation of the real-life version of the United Nations. Members are assigned to a country that they are the delegation of and formulate their stances on world issues. Groups then draft a delegation paper that gets posted online once they are finished at the NMUN website.
“It is a logistically well-organized and exhilarating experience that is essential for soft skills and workforce preparedness as well as being enormously fun,” said Dr. Richard Arnold, Associate Professor of Political Science.
This year’s Model UN had four members, Hunter Loy, Riley Watson, Hope Craft, and Isaiah Bowie.
Current club members are hoping to get more membership and more support from the school.
“There were things we missed out on this trip because the funding was inadequate, and we are hoping to turn that around,” said Watson.
The Model UN members went to New York City from April 3 to 8 for the National Model United Nations conference.
At the conference, the members of the club got to see the United Nations main headquarters.
If Model UN can get enough interest, then they will go to the Model UN conference in Washington D.C. next November. The more members they have, the less expensive it is for each member.
Model UN is currently a three-credit class taught by Arnold. The class is also a club and is also hoping to grow in numbers.
Due to Arnold going on sabbatical leave next academic semester, there will be no Model UN club. However, once he returns, the club will meet again and prepare for the April 2023 Model UN conference .
