Muskingum University started construction on the new Health and Wellness Complex (HWC) Monday, June 29. The project began with demolition of the grandstands, press box, and concession stand areas in preparation for the new facility.

University President Susan S. Hasseler said Muskingum will honor the history of the original stadium that opened in 1926 with a special display in the new complex.

“This stadium served Muskingum for almost 100 years and so, I do this with a fair amount of respect and with some real excitement for the next 100 years because what we’re going to put here is going to serve Muskingum, it’s going to serve New Concord, it’s going to serve the whole region. So, this is to another 100 years,” said Hasseler.

The 119,000 square-foot Health and Wellness Complex will include a center for student learning, training, and research. The facility will also include multi-purpose classrooms, a full-access stadium, fieldhouse, and indoor practice spaces for varsity athletes.

The HWC will serve area residents and high school students along with Muskingum students, faculty, and staff members.

The facility is the largest capital project in Muskingum’s history. Hasseler said over $17 million has been raised in private donations for the complex. The project is estimated to cost $30 million. “People are very excited about how transformational this project is going to be,” said Hasseler.

The university is hoping to keep the track and turf field open during the HWC construction as much as possible. The new facility is scheduled to be finished by Fall 2022.
