I came to Muskingum knowing I wanted to be involved in WMCO and Orbit Media but had no idea what was in store for me.

In the last three years, I have hosted my own radio show for six semesters, written web stories, chosen music for the station, and I have led my organization as Program Director for two semesters now.

Not only has WMCO given me on campus opportunities, but also off campus. Because of college radio, I now serve as the national student representative for the College Broadcasters, Inc. (CBI). Through that, I have met several phenomenal people in the industry and have had the opportunity to contribute to an extracurricular in ways I would have never imagined three years ago.

Thanks to college radio, I feel like my voice is not only welcome but heard. It allows me to give back to a community that has shaped me over the last three years. It has allowed me to bring awareness through airwaves to other things I am passionate about such as Women’s History Month and Hispanic Heritage Month. There is always something new to learn, and that’s why I love it.

WMCO is also open to all students, whether they are media majors or not. We have many people on staff who are either double majors with something other than media production or journalism, and some who aren’t in this department at all. We also have 10 new DJs learning the ropes this semester who will have their own show next semester.

I have met some of my very best friends through college radio, and that’s why I think WMCO has not only given me a voice, but a home.

WMCO will be live from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Oct. 6 celebrating World College Radio Day with hundreds of stations across the world.
