Muskingum University Director of Career Services, Jacquelyn Vascura, is continuing to offering resources for students despite the campus closing due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Career Services provides opportunities for students in preparing for their professional future. Resources include helping students with deciding a major, interviewing, résumé building, and finding a job or master’s program after their time at Muskingum.
Students are still able to contact Career Services and Vascura for assistance.
“We set up phone calls or FaceTime or whatever we need to do to help them [students]. I’ve had students working on interviewing and we’ve done mock interview calls. We’ve done résumé reviews. You name it, we’ve been doing it if they [students] need it,” said Vascura.
During a normal semester, Vascura would visit classes to host workshops about résumé building and interviewing. However, with Muskingum University’s online learning format, Vascura had to get creative with workshops.
“I have also created some videos..mini-workshops that I have sent out to faculty members so they can use them in their classes,” said Vascura.
Vascura named some of her favorite career resources for students.
One of these resources is called the Interest Inventory, which was linked in recent Muskingum Student Digest emails. This is a questionnaire for students who are trying to figure out what areas they are best suited to pursue.
The daily Muskingum Student Digest email also regularly links several different job, internship, and volunteer opportunities.
Vascura provided website resources students can use to find jobs in their home communities.
“Indeed.com, SimplyHire.com, those are really good resources if they [students] are looking for jobs. Linkedin, it’s a great time now to look at Linkedin and update your profile and researching what’s out there,” said Vascura.
Vascura suggests that students do research on companies, organizations, and opportunities in their home areas. This can help students understand what companies and organizations are looking for when they are hiring.
Seniors who are graduating in May are urged to reach out to Career Services.
“We can have a conversation. I have one-on-one appointments with students to say ‘What are you thinking about doing? What are the steps you need to be taking?’ that sort of thing. We can still do those conversations via the phone if a student is interested in talking about their future and what they would like to do, what their skills might be, and how we can best present those. There are definitely ways that we can be talking and working together on that,” said Vascura.
Vascura encourages students to reach out to her for anything career or academic-career based.
“I miss our Muskies. I can’t wait for all of us to be reunited on campus again. It’s quiet here in New Concord and I miss seeing all your smiling faces on campus,” said Vascura.
