Muskingum University’s Black Student Union (BSU) hosted five events for the campus throughout the month of February to celebrate Black History Month.
Members of BSU had a Black history trivia table in the Bait Shop for students and staff to learn more about Black history through interactive games and have an opportunity to win prizes such as hats, wristbands, and water bottles.
During the Muskingum men’s basketball team’s last home game, BSU had a support night where members of the executive board supported the team. During halftime, the board members introduced themselves and had more Black History Month prizes to distribute.
To allow the campus to learn more about the legacy, challenges, and triumphs of Rev. Martin Luther King Jr., BSU had a reflection walkthrough on Feb. 18. The walkthrough began in Boyd Science Center, traveled to the Steele Center, Caldwell Hall, and concluded in Brown Chapel.
“I was excited with how it went this year, and I am looking forward to having more people involved next year,” said Casey Smith, president of the Black Student Union.
To wrap up the last Brewed Awakenings for the month of February, BSU ordered food from Urban Comforts Eatery and hosted another round of trivia in the bottom of the Walter K. Chess Center.
The final event BSU hosted was with the Muskingum Programming Board on Feb. 25. These two groups hosted an open microphone night to encourage students to read a poem, drop some beats, or sing some karaoke.
The Black Student Union anticipates on celebrating Black History Month each year, as well as host more events on campus in the future.
“I learned new things about Black history everyday, so I am excited to share that with everybody on campus again sometime,” said Smith.
Muskingum University Student Senate, Greek Council, and Black Student Union will be hosting a Unity Day Friday, April 8.
More information will be announced once students return from spring break.
Black Student Union meets every other Thursday in the Chess Center, room 307.
