The Muskingum University Athletic Department hired Christopher Bilski as the new esports head coach.
Bilski previously coached at Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, Michigan as the head coach of the League of Legends squad.
Along with being the League of Legends head coach, Bilski scheduled scrimmages with teams from other colleges and helped develop players as individuals and collectively as a team. He also scouted other teams’ strengths and weaknesses and evaluated his team’s play after matches. Bilski aided in leading the Saints to a first-place finish in the Great Lakes Esports Conference (GLEC) in the 2019-2020 season.
Steve Brockelbank, Muskingum University’s Vice President and Athletic Director, is thrilled to bring in Bilski to lead the Muskies.
“I’m excited to welcome Christopher to the Muskie family. His experience and passion for esports will have a positive impact on our student-athletes and help build the Muskingum esports program,” said Brockelbank.
Becoming Muskingum’s esports head coach fulfills a career aspiration for Bilski.
“Joining the Fighting Muskies is a dream position for me. Having attended a similar institution, I am appreciative of the unique opportunities and experiences a place like Muskingum University can provide to students. With my coaching experience and background in the esports industry, I am eager to engage and connect students through esports with opportunities to grow as individuals and as teammates,” said Bilski.
Additionally, Bilski has worked as a freelance esports journalist for the last five years. He has worked with numerous gaming media groups like The Players’ Lobby, Ginx.TV, The Game Haus, and CLICKON Esports. He has written and published more than 300 articles and created gaming content for YouTube and Twitch.
The Muskingum esports team competed in its inaugural season in the GLEC this past academic year, finishing fifth out of nine teams. The Muskies competed in League of Legends, Rocket League, Overwatch, and Counter-Strike.
Muskingum plans to start on-campus instruction for the 2020-2021 academic year on Tuesday, Aug. 18.
Ohio Athletic Conference (OAC) athletic competition for all fall sports will begin play on Sept. 19. Football, soccer, and volleyball will only play teams in the conference, while cross country, golf, and tennis will be allowed to compete against schools outside of the OAC.
